Most beautiful at Skanderborg

Skanderborg, a charming old royal town, has a tremendously rich cultural history. In 1583 Skanderborg was granted a municipal charter, since when it has developed to become a modern provincial town with a good infrastructure and many recreational activities on offer.

This is also where we find Ejer Baunehøj, at 170.89 metres above sea level the highest point in Denmark. The views from the summit are magnificent – and free for all to enjoy from the top of the thirteen-metre-high reunification tower with lift facilities.

Lakes and woods
The countryside in Denmark does not come more beautiful than at Skanderborg – ideal for walks as well as bicycle rides. Central to it all is Skanderborg Sø with the pleasure boat Dagmar taking tourists for trips round the lake.

The lake is excellent for sailing and rowing and many citizens also venture
out in canoes or kayaks, weather permitting.

Skanderborg also boasts a swimming pool in the middle of the woods, yet near the lakeshore, of course, and manned throughout the summer by lifeguards.

Many of Skanderborg’s hotels and inns are also situated near the lake.

Hotels
There are two charming hotels in Skanderborg. One of the hotels caters for
families as well as offering weekend breaks and conference facilities. It lies in an idyllic spot right between the two lakes, at the heart of town and with magnificent views.

The other hotel is a conference venue, also with views of the lake and offering a very high standard of conference and meeting facilities. The hotel has its own golf course and tennis court and excellent facilities for small meetings as well as large conferences.

Both hotels are easily accessible, a mere 5 kilometres from the motorway exit.

Youth hostel
The only youth hostel in Skanderborg is also situated by the lake. A perfect place for families looking to stay in the middle of the woods, right on the shore with its own beach and an extremely pleasant atmosphere, and of course views to write home about. The youth hostel has well-appointed family rooms as well as modern cabins with showers and toilets. Self-caterers can use the shared kitchen facilities, while others may venture the short distance up to the town with its variety of restaurants.
Campsite
Skanderborg’s campsite is also beautifully situated in the heart of the countryside with its own beach. Characterised by peace and tranquillity, the campsite offers good facilities for the elderly as well as young families.

There is space for small tents and also a number of well-appointed cabins with good toilet and shower facilities nearby. There is a playground for the children, minigolf for all and, of course, plenty of opportunities to enjoy the countryside at close hand.

Inns, campsites, hotels etc.
There are, of course, many other places to stay around the Municipality of Skanderborg. Several campsites not far off.

Many atmospheric inns which are characteristic of the area, and several hotels situated just outside the municipality, yet within a short distance.

Attractions
The Deer Park is a beautiful beach wood and also where Denmark’s Most Beautiful Festival is held each year.

The biggest event in Skanderborg takes place during the second weekend in August when the town doubles in size during the four days of the festival.

The festival attracts all sorts of people to Skanderborg where they come to hear many different kinds of music. From classical music by symphony orchestras to the latest rock.

Skanderborg Museum is situated in the offices of the old town recorder – also by the lake, of course.

The museum has a number of permanent exhibitions about the history of the town, its castle and the local area. Visitors are welcome to use the tables and benches in the gardens.

The Freedom Museum, which is housed in an old bunker in the Deer Park, has an exhibition of weaponry, radio equipment and maps from the Second World War.

The Castle Chapel is also worth a visit, dating from the 13th century. The family von Pultz rests here, and the chapel is all that remains of the original Skanderborg Castle.
At the centre of Skanderborg is the old part of town, made up of private houses, all a bit crooked and steeped in the atmosphere of yesteryear.
