THE DANISH ROAD DIRECTORATE

The Danish Road Directorate is a government organization under the Ministry of Transport and has the overall goal to implement the national traffic policies, including to ensure mobility and traffic safety.

The Danish Road Directorate is a road administration responsible for the overall national road network of approximately 1,650 km in total, of which around 950 km are motorways. In addition, the Danish Road Directorate accumulates the international “Road Knowledge”.
The Danish Road Directorate has a total budget of approximately 2 billion Danish Kroner in 2003 and around 450 permanent employees; furthermore there are a number of consultants working on specific assignments. Approximately 90% of the Danish Road Directorate’s tasks are carried out by private companies with the Danish Road Directorate as the owner.

The Danish Road Directorate has 3 main
offices:

Copenhagen is the headquarters with management and administration, and it is also the head office for the Maintenance Unit which is responsible for all the maintenance assignments on the national road network.

Roskilde is the head office for the Road Institute, which is in charge of research and development and is also the base for laboratory work, such as soil, aggregates and asphalt.

Skanderborg is now the head office for the Construction Unit, which is in charge of all the construction assignments – planning, design and supervision on the whole national road network. One department in the Construction Unit, Construction Consulting Department, also carries out consulting services on business terms for “external clients”, like counties, municipalities etc. The strength of this department is that it can draw upon the Danish Road Directorate’s extensive knowledge about road construction.

The Danish Road Directorate’s office in Skanderborg also houses one district office under the Maintenance Unit. This district office takes care of the daily maintenance of the national road network from Horsens to Skagen.

The Road Institute also has a department in Skanderborg. In addition to research and development, the main task of this department is to provide consulting services on business terms to counties and municipalities. Some of the services that are provided relate to measuring, surveying and servicing of maintenance management systems (MMS) – e.g. VEJMAN – a road MMS used by the counties.

The Danish Road Directorate established the office in Skanderborg in 1973 and it has approx. 150 staff members, permanent employees and consultants. It is one of the larger companies in Skanderborg and is regarded as one of the leading knowledge centres in the Danish road sector.
