The beautiful countryside in the Municipality of Skanderborg is ideally suited for active holidays. Don your hiking boots and try scaling some of the peaks in the area, for example Himmelbjerget – “Sky Mountain” – and Ejer Baunehøj.

By visiting the Danish websites             www.bestigbjerge.dk    which gives details of local routes for walkers, and/or       www.gode-historier.dk    which lists infor-mation on talks planned in various parts of Denmark about the local countryside, culture etc., you can prepare yourself for wonderful walks – either with or without a story!

Such electronic information is becoming increasingly used in the tourist industry, but you can also meet us face to face at one of our offices in Ry or Skanderborg – and during the summer holidays we also have a tourist information desk at Himmelbjerget. “We” are Destination Skanderborg, and we would like to welcome you as a guest to this part of Denmark.

It is primarily the beautiful countryside with its varied topography that people find so impressive. Big woods, deep lakes, hilltops and valleys. The Gudenåen river and the many lakes are ideal for canoeing or kayaking trips and for seeing the countryside from the water. You can also take the river boat on Skanderborg lake or hop on board the tourist boat which sails between Ry and Himmelbjerget. The river and the lakes are also good for anglers, and it is possible to catch most well-known freshwater species of fish.

The museums in the area provide a wonderful sense of history, describing how communities, people and the countryside have developed and changed over the years. Since the Middle Ages, monks and nuns have left their mark, building dams, sluices and fish weirs along the Gudenåen river. Skanderborg Castle Chapel stands as a relic from the past, while Skanderborg Castle was constructed using materials from the demolished Øm monastery. The churches in the municipality are also worth visiting – there are lots of them, and they vary greatly in terms of their architecture and layout.

There is a wide choice of accommodation, from simple camp sites and three-star camping grounds to charming inns, manor houses and youth hostels. And there is a wide choice of restaurants serving delicious meals.

To all active nature-lovers, welcome to the Municipality of Skanderborg.
