FDF outdoor centre ‘Sletten’

Denmark’s most beautiful camp area in the heart of the Danish Lake District
‘Sletten’ is located on the banks of the Julsø lake in the middle of the Danish Lake District. It is a large outdoor centre run by FDF, one of the largest Christian organisations for children and young people in Denmark. FDF usually claims that the site, which covers more than 300 acres of land, is the most beautiful camp area in the country, and they could well be right. With its combination of stunning views of Julsø, direct access to the lake, expansive grasslands, dark conifers, tall beeches and in particular the extremely varied woodlands in the hilly landscape, Sletten provides those

who love nature and outdoor living with something for every taste.

As a camp area, Sletten offers everything from a plain grass area, shelters or a covered bunk circle to sophisticated buildings such as the energy-saving huts at Bøgebjerg or ‘the new Sletten’, widely known for its special architecture. If you are interested in renting accommodation at the FDF outdoor centre Sletten, more information is available at   www.FDF.dk/Sletten

Sletten is a great asset to the local population and tourists alike! Not many privately owned woodland areas are as welcoming to people who go hiking or walking with the family or otherwise enjoy the area’s beautiful natural scenery. At Sletten, right-of-way restrictions have been eased compared to most private woodlands; in fact, visitors are even allowed to venture outside the roads and marked footpaths provided that they respect the privacy of the various facilities in the area which are rented out.

Every fifth year in July (usually in years ending in 1 or 6), FDF organises its national camps, known as Camp Julsø, in the area. On those occasions, 10-15,000 FDF members stay at Sletten for ten days, a small independent community is built for the purpose, and the participants enjoy themselves together without concerning themselves too much with the world around them. Camp Julsø is a great experience for the participating FDF members but also worth a visit for non-members who would like to see a unique and spectacular example of life as a member of a Danish organisation for children and young people.
